When the blood supply to the brain is suddenly reduced or stopped, a stroke occurs. Without immediate medical intervention, the part of the brain that is deprived of blood can no longer function. There are treatments that can reduce the risk of damage from the most common types of stroke, but only if you get help quickly, which is why EVERY MINUTE COUNTS!
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
- Smoking
- Physical inactivity and obesity
- Heart disease
- Atrial fibrillation
- History of Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA)
- Family history of stroke

- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
