Endoscopy is the inspection of body organs or cavities by using an endoscope. An endoscope is a device consisting of a tube and optical system for observing the inside of a hollow organ or body cavity. The most common organs or body parts examined by endoscopy are the colon (called colonoscopy) or esophagus (called upper endoscopy).
The physician who normally performs these procedures is called a gastroenterologist. To find a medical doctor who specializes in gastroenterology, click here.
