Our Philosophy

The Department of Nursing at Emory Eastside Medical Center acknowledges that the practice of professional nursing is based on a foundation of knowledge taken from the sciences (biological, pharmaceutical, psychological, social), legal and ethical principles, concepts of empathy, compassion, caring and respect that results in the diligent and careful provision of nursing care.

Professional nursing care at Emory Eastside Medical Center focuses on the individual person, in the context of their environment and their state of health. Therefore, the practice of professional nursing seeks to address the individual in a holistic manner, which may include, but be not limited to: physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, economic, rehabilitative and educative needs.

Health is recognized as being dynamic and changes in health status affect not only an individual's sense of wellbeing, but also, their role and responsibilities as related to self, family, community and society at large. The individual patient is cared for in a manner mindful of these things. Each individual is due the right of self-determination and to this end is afforded the opportunity to make decisions concerning their healthcare, and while hospitalized, to participate, to the degree that they are able to, in their care. When patients are not able to participate in self-care activities, nurses will provide this care to help the patient achieve the highest level of well being they are capable of experiencing.

Nurses are responsible for the care they provide to patients. This involves the careful collection of information concerning the patient, the application of critical thinking concerning the information, the planning and delivery of the nursing care along with an evaluation of the impact of the care provided. The provision of nursing care will be provided in a collaborative manner with other members of the healthcare team, the patient’s family, and significant others in order to facilitate the delivery of coordinated, comprehensive and high quality healthcare
