  • Eastside Medical Center Promotes Heart Health and Supports Go Red for Women Campaign

February 03, 2012

Snellville, GA February 3, 2012 Today is the 9th Annual National Wear Red Day and Eastside Medical Center employees wear red in support of this important campaign.

Go Red For Women is a nationwide movement created by the American Heart Association and designed to celebrate the energy, passion and power that women have to band together and wipe out heart disease. Spreading the Go Red For Women message by wearing red on National Wear Red day empowers women to love – and save – their hearts through lifestyle choices and actions.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, heart disease is often silent, hidden and misunderstood.

Currently some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six women believes that heart disease is her great health threat. In fact, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for development heart disease.

“Raising awareness of heart health issues ultimately enhances the level of wellness within the community,” said Mary Ellen Bergh, M.D., cardiologist at Eastside. “Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of more than 460,000 women each year. That’s why it is so important to understand your personal risk factors and often-overlooked common symptoms, and to share that information with the women you love.”
